Whom/How to ask for a college recommendation letter?

Is it okay to ask for a letter of recommendation over email in this situation?

• I'm applying for college right now, and one of the teachers (who I had in Honors Trig last year) I was about to ask for a letter of recommendation just went on an indefinite leave to be with a sick family member. I don't want to push off asking for a letter, as she might be gone for a while. Is it appropriate in this case to ask her to write me a letter of rec over email? (I would write a very understanding note, explaining that I feel bad about doing this over email, but wasn't able to catch you before you left, and if she isn't able to because of family reasons I would completely understand). I have no doubt that she if able would be very very enthusiastic about writing a letter and would write a great one..but don't want to seem like i'm putting a burden on her. Is it appropriate to ask her to do this, and over email?

  Though there definitely could have been a better time to ask, I don't see anything too monumentally wrong with sending a heartfelt email expressing your condolences, and very clearly stating that if she feels that now isn't a good time, or perhaps if/when she returns would be better then that is entirely alright. Just make sure she knows that you're not entirely oblivious to the fact that she's gone for a serious reason. If you do do this, then make sure to do it soon so that, if she agrees, she can balance writing it with her familial obligations and doesn't feel rushed and divided. Good luck!
