How & where do I get a criminal record check & a child abuse registry check?

Okay, so I have just been accepted into an early childhood education college program but I am now expected to bring them a criminal record check & child abuse registry check before I begin classes. I haven't got the slightest idea where to begin with this so any info would be great. Where can I get these? How long will it take? How much will it cost? Ect.. Thanx :)

police stations....police sub-stations... court houses should have some sort of access to these as well.. back ground checks are $20 in my city....dunno about the child abuse thing...
