I want to quit track and just focus on school and my passions, should I?

I'm a sophomore in high school and I haven't been performing my best when it comes to grades. Before high school, I did really well and I was placed in the gifted education program in the 5th grade after taking an IQ test. I've always considered myself intelligent and a pretty decent writer as well, but once I finished the 8th grade, high school hit me pretty hard. I received four Bs and four Cs total in my honors academic classes last year. This semester of 10th grade, I currently have almost all Cs aside from a borderline B in English. I'm not the type you would expect to be a "C student", and I actually consider myself far more intellectual than most of my peers. I just have this issue revolving around work ethic, time management, and motivation. I decided to try indoor track this year to have some regular exercise and maybe something to put on a college transcript. I've enjoyed practices and the exercise does a lot for my overall mood, but the idea of competition stresses me out and frightens me more than anything. This has caused me to constantly worry and I've been facing a lot of sleep loss and anxiety. I want to quit track so I can just focus on getting As and Bs in school right now and direct more attention towards writing and songwriting, things I'd like to make careers out of. I'm not worried about college and whether or not I'll get accepted because I don't have enough extra-curriculars. I just want to learn how to excel in school first. Should I quit track even though my parents and friends don't want me to? They're all concerned that I won't get anywhere in life because I'm not involved in too many things.

Answer:
You should do it if that's what you want to do. If it means to get your grades up then I think you should. My opinion.

I can halfway understand the time problems and grades issue. I'm in the school marching band, and that takes up a LOT of time. I had practices every day of the week before and after school, so I was dead tired. My grades started slipping and I was worrying. But all I did was relax, take some time to think about what I really wanted to do, and once I decided I wanted to stay in the band, I made myself a schedule. I split my time-half for practicing, the other half for studying and homework. My grades have most certainly improved, and even though I was still worrying about competitions and stuff, I had time for everything. If this didn't help too much, then just do what you see is best.
