What are unemployment benefits?

College and unemployment benefits - what's the rule?

  • I asked a similar question earlier and so far found out that technically I can't go to college and recieve unemployment benefits. However, when I filled out the application for emergency benefits, I declared that I am enrolled in college classes, yet I was approved for benefits. The actual question was (if I remember correctly) "Is there anything that would interfere with your availability for work (college, etc)". I am very confused. My college classes are being funded in part by financial aid and parts by the Department for Volunary Rehab (I'm dealing with ADD and anxiety issues, which made it hard for me to find/keep work) And my counselor was telling me again and again that I can collect unemployment benefits while going to college, besides it shouldn't infringe with availability because any employer is required to make/adjust schedules around class schedules, right? Anyways, considering that I'm already at the point where I'm getting emergency benefits I'm very concerned because my classes start in a couple of weeks and if I end up being denied benefits then I'm going to be royally screwed!

  • Answer:

The thing is, while in college, you are not REQUIRED to work, because, to law, your job IS studying. of course, most students study while in college, but this is considered secondary. I would really recommend you call your town hall or wherever you can get information, RIGHT NOW. Do it before you actually start classes, please!
