Need your opinion on my resume?

RESUME HELP! I NEED YOUR OPINION...?

  • I'm a hair stylist and I'm writing a resume for a top salon... i got everything figured out but my objective.... I got this so far Objective: TO OBTAIN A POSITION AS A HAIR DESIGNER TO FURTHER MY CAREER IN THE COSMETOLOGY FIELD. OR PURSUING A CHALLENGING AND REWARDING POSITION AS A HAIR DESIGNER TO FURTHER MY CAREER IN THE COSMETOLOGY FIELD. what do you think....which one sounds better to you?

  • Answer:

I would just say "Pursuing a challenging and rewarding position as a hair designer in a salon that values the customers and education as a means to deliver superior service" The employer doesn't care whether you "further" your career. They're just interested in what you can bring to the table and your commitment to giving them your best work 200% of the time. Omit "in the cosmetology field" as that is a given when you state "hair designer" Good Luck with the interview.

Between the two, I would say the first. I, generally would suggest something to the effect of: "To obtain a position as a hair stylist in which I may utilize and enhance (or expand upon) my education and experience." Just a suggestion.? I actually read an article about resumes and applying for new jobs not too long ago. Advisers were saying that objective statements aren't even necessary nowadays. Of course, I'd probably still include it. Maybe I'm a bit old school but I'd rather be safe than sorry. I would suggest looking up sample hair stylist/beautician resumes for some good objective statements. This will give you a better idea as to what's considered a good objective statement in your field. Simply find one you like and use it or taylor it to make it your own. Hope this helps! Good luck!

Objective statements are outdated now. Instead, I would simply use a job title, such as HAIR STYLIST, at the top of your resume (below your name and contact information). The comments about challenging, rewarding and furthering your career are perceived as fluff and don't add anything to the fact that you're a hair stylist and they are seeking a hair stylist. It doesn't need to be more complicated than that. Best of luck! Michael Howard Professional Resume Writer and Author of "Alternative Resumes" www.alternativeresumes.com
