How to display child page from specific parent page in homepage?

As a teacher do you blame the parents or child when...?

  • So last night my Dd in Kind. had a worksheet for homework. It was simple enough... count the different types of candy and write the answer. 5 kisses, 4 jelly beans, etc. So we read the directions together, I handed her the pencil and went to the stove. When I turned around 5 minutes later she had taken marker all over the page. I was angry with her and she couldn't tell me why she did it (of course) and that yes she understood the directions. I sat with her and made her fill in the rest of the page neatly. Anyway, DD has done stuff like this before. Such as not turning in completed worksheets and instead leaving them in her bag. Sometimes when I conference with the teacher she will purse her lips at me like somehow I am not doing my job as a parent. I hate that she may think this about me b/c we do in fact value education very much. Once DD leaves the house I don't have much control over whether she turns in the paper. Isn't that something the teacher should make sure they empty their bags? As for the marker at home, I feel that at almost 6 DD should have the ability to not defy me and maybe I shouldn't have turned my back on her but again I also feel if DD does something like that with or without me it has to be her, not me, that gets the pursed lips. So ultimately my question is this.... From your POV as a teacher when you assign HW in Kind. who is ultimate responsibility is it, the parent or the child? Also, when a child turns in a messy homework do you fault the parent or the child?

I think Donald B has some good points. I shall add several things that I think the parent should do in this situation. The parent should call the teacher and find out what reason a kindergarten child should have homework to take home to do. I have not ever heard of that before and never in kindergarten. I know the theorists' views of kindergarten very well. Piaget never wrote that you should give a kindergarten child homework? I think the parents should ask, what is this teacher trying to accomplish? I can guess that different education legislation has stressed improving the schools. But, kindergarten is supposed to be a kinder, gentler place where children are treated with loving care, and warm, caring teachers. It is not a place where children are enrolled to be coerced by their parents to do homework at home. That sounds to me either like too much pressure placed on the kindergarten teacher to improve kindergarten by driving them to do homework, or some misunderstood efforts to show the parents that the school is doing everything it can to improve the learnings expected in kindergarten class. I really believe that the parent should talk with the school principal about the goals that the school has for kindergarten and how to achieve them in more realistic ways. Kindergarten teaching is supported by well grounded, long standing theories and methods. Homework was never part of either the practices or the research on effective and successful kindergartens. Good luck.

Why are you looking to blame someone? Your child is in kindergarten. Many kids forget to turn in their homework. Both you and the teacher should work with DD to make sure she does not forget. Do you really want teachers to go through you child's bag every day? Turning in homework when requested is a skill that needs to be taught by you and the teacher.
