Elementary Teacher for 2010-2011?
-
I recently had an interview for a kindergarten position. I was contacted directly by the principal to interview for the position the same week and I hadnt even applied for the position. However, I was very interested! So, I had a great interview and the principal and 5 other staff member interviewed me together. The interview seemed to go great. After getting a tour of the school and before leaving, the principal said to me, "I am really in a bind right now because the district wants to allow all their high school teachers to get hired first and then they will allow us to hire our teachers but right now I am waiting on them to let me know I can hire. You should hear from me the middle to end of next week but you are DEFINITELY at the top of my list I just can't hire just yet. I have to get through next week though and I have 2 more interviews and then you should hear from me." Well, I left feeling very positive! I was anxious to hear whether I had received the job. It has been 10 days since the interview and I havent heard anything. TAKS week was last week when he said I might hear from him so I am guessing he probably didnt even think about hiring with TAKS going on. It is now Tuesday so 11 days after the interview. I immediately sent a thank you after the interview by mail and then a short email yesterday saying I was still interested and I really would like to leave it at that. I got no response again. Do you think this principal is just waiting on the freeze to lift before progressing forward with the process of hiring or do you think he is overlooking me. Any helpful advice or experience would be great! Thank you!

Answer:
Very odd. He should have answered your email. Keep applying for other positions. Don't put all your eggs in one basket.

Administration is the biggest hinderance to good schools. It's that simple. First of all, the policy that they hire high school teachers first is inefficient. It's not like they share a principal or anything. Building controlled hiring would solve this problem... but then again, if the Principal didn't reply to you, or let you know how things are progressing, they sound a little flakey. I'd give them a courtesy call. (write it out before you call, so it's 100% professional) and I'd start considering other options.
