Good organizations for teaching English abroad?
-
Anyone have experience with teaching English abroad? I'm looking for advice on finding a reputable organization through which to go. Nobody wants to be scammed. I'm highly interested in the organization teachingchile.com. I should specify that my preference is Latin America, and would love Chile above all else. I'm not concerned with what to do, what qualifications I need, and all of that. I have that covered. I'm just wondering if anyone can say from experience what's a good organization to use, and what's not. Thanks!

Answer:
Firstly most teachers find work privately rather than through programs. If you have the qualifications then it's usually pretty straightforward. Of course if you use a program or agency then be sure to check them out. The number 1 rule is never give ANYONE any money to find you work. If you follow this then you won't be scammed and remember that whilst there are occasional scams out there, by far the majority of jobs and placements are perfectly legit. Read the 3 articles below for in-depth info on this. Good luck!

One of the best sources for this type of information may be a local college or university. They often have programs of travel and may be able to help you for free. Their programs are for the benefit of your further education, and not as a moneymaking proposition. They can probably also give you some pointers about the companies that you are considering using. I know college students that have traveled abroad to teach English, for example. It really doesn't matter what their major is when they travel to teach, because they know English better than their students in a foreign country. But I think you are saying that you want to advance your own education. If that's the case then I would recommend a college or university as a beginning point. A college or university may also be able to give you some advice as to the companies that you are considering using. They may have students who have used one or two of the companies you are considering. And remember to check with the embassy in the United States of the country that you are considering visiting. They may also have valuable information that you need to know. Good luck.
