Are math teachers in high/ higher demand than other teachers?

Im thinking of becoming a math teacher in high school or elementary. How much in demand is that position?

  • Hello, im looking for a quick pick me up. i'm currently a sophomore is college. Im currently at a bridge in my studies where i can continue taking pre-pharmacy courses or i can pursue a career in math. I would love to become a math high school teacher, maybe become a coach of some kind and mold young minds. I would like to continue pre pharmacy courses but i honestly have always wanted to teach. my question is then, how in demand are teachers in the math department? what are the starting salaries, the sacrifices, the steps, any advice a current student or current teacher can pitch out will be very much appreciated. Ive been told because my first language is Spanish that acts as a bonus in my resume. i would just like to know some facts.....TY

  • Answer:

I'm a substitute teacher right now (just graduated, trying to find a full time job), and from what I've seen Math teachers in Jr High and High School are in pretty high demand. If you can speak fluent Spanish and will be in an area with a decent sized Spanish population, that's a definite plus. It's definitely harder to get hired as an elementary school teacher than it is for secondary (I'm in elementary). I'd recommend becoming a Jr High or High School math teacher, unless elementary is where your true passion is. My passion is the young ones (K-1 especially), so I'm willing to pursue this even if it means waiting a while to get hired permanently. It would be a good idea for you to pursue a degree in math, and then get your teaching cert. In my area (Seattle suburbs), a first year teacher with a BA makes about $34,000 per year. You move up on the salary scale with years of teaching experience and college credits. Good luck! We need more amazing teachers :)

Believe me ! Please, believe me , IF you are an excellent Math teacher, ( especially patient with the students) you will be in great demand, great demand believe me ! A teacher of Math that loves to teach, is patient with the poor student, and is dedicated, is a teacher worth of " worship" ( so to speak! ) Such teacher is enormously appreciated. ( I personally know a wonderful Math Teacher that is of Spanish mother, that teacher began to teach in a High School, now he is a Professor in a well know university and was chosen several times Professor of the Year But...he is patient with the student that can't understand Math,( or hates it) he loves to teach...that is the difference. )
