What are Home School Teaching Requirements in Virginia?

Can I get a teaching license as a green card holder (non-US citizen)?

  • I'm a legal permanent resident (green card holder). I'm looking for certification primarily in Texas and Virginia. I already have my degrees from a US college, I would just need the certification (at either middle or high school level) but I know in certain states, it is not possible to get licensed without citizenship or only temporarily through some kind of permit. I was trying to look this up but couldn't find much information on this. If someone could give me a link or info, I'd appreciate it. BTW, I have a green card which also authorizes me to work. I can only apply for citizenship in 2 years and I would like to start working sooner than that. I just don't know if I could do my practice teaching (the practicum component of the certification) without citizenship. The official website does not list citizenship as a requirement but the schools I have asked have such requirements.

  • Answer:

Yes, you can get a teaching credential. Hopefully you will get it in math, science or special education as those are the areas that are the easiest to get positions. If you are in the common subjects such as English or History, your citizenship may be a detriment as employers may wish to hire citizens are there are few teaching positions open right now for inexperienced teachers.
