How to become an English teacher?

  • I'm interested in becoming a high school or college English teacher/professor. It looks like one can either major in English with a teaching certificate or major in Education with a concentration in English. I'm leaning toward becoming an English major to be more knowledgeable of the subject. I love the language and wanted to major in it after high school, but I was reluctant to because at the time, I thought careers would be limited. I live in Michigan, btw. I'm also interested in traveling to my motherland of India to teach English there for a few years. If I do decide to get a BA in English, how can I get teaching credentials? Thanks.

    It all depends on where you are going to college at. Each State has its own requirements. You best bet is to contact the university/college on which you plan to attend and ask them that question. In my State (Ohio) to teach highschool, one must get a B.A. in English Education.

In the US teaching credentials are issued by the state and each state has different requirements. I do not know what the requirements are in India, but after my recent trip there, I do know that they are very much in need of English teachers who can speak English so Americans can understand it. Indians have developed their own pronunciation in India which is almost unintelligible. As someone who has lived in the US, I imagine you have developed excellent pronunciation. You are sorely needed in India. Good luck!
