High school senior teaching music lessons? It this a good price?
-
I am having difficulty finding a job anywhere...almost all applications are done electronically now, and NO ONE has responded to any of mine! I have been playing flute for about 9 years now, and I am very good at it. I am thinking about posting around music lessons for beginner flute players, because that is a way for me to make some money. I was going to do half-hour lessons for $10. I have never done anything like this before, but I think it might be fun. First off, am I allowed to do this? I mean, it is legal to advertise for simple music lessons without any sort of degree, right? I am almost 18, female, and graduating in a few months. I need money for when I go to college!

Answer:
I'd hire you! I read an article in Wired that says nearly 50% of the worlds working population is engaged in off-the-books work that requires no special degree. It estimates within 15 more years, that figure will be closer to 70%. It speculates that the reason for this 'black market economy' is that the current mainstream economy is so screwed, most of us have to create our own jobs. That takes creativity, resourcefulness, and an entrepreneurial spirit, which is what made this country strong in the first place!

I think 10 is fair because you don't have a degree in music or pedagogy. It might help to find a student or two to teach for even less, so you can try it out and make sure you are capable. (maybe a neighbor kid)Teaching is a lot different than playing well, a lot of it is personality and patience.

I would say yes. I have been singing for 7 years and I have been teaching some of the students at my old high school part time. Mostly music theory and technique. The only difficulty I found was putting a lesson together; outlining it, keeping the flow up, and making sure you will be able to support them when they get frustrated. My first few lessons were kind of rocky. Luckily I had the experience of teaching riding lessons so I had a little help. I believe you can legally advertise by word of mouth and approved postings. If you post at a public place (like a school) it should be up on an approved posting area, and approved by the governing body at the school that handles advertising. Otherwise you could get in trouble. I just went to the student activities at my old high school and my college and they approved my posting, easy as cake. 10 a 1/2 hour sounds a little high for an undergrad. My teacher (who is a professional) charges 25 an hour. Maybe start at 8 a 1/2 hour? See what other local professionals are charging in your area to base your amount.
