What can you do with a degree in Digital Media and Broadcast Film?

I have a degree in broadcast journalsim and film, how do I become a teacher?

  • I have always had an interest in teaching. I have a BS in broadcast and film, as an undergrad I have independently studied and taught a class about branding, portfolio construction, and career related info. I also have won awards for film and tv stories. Would I be able to get a job at a private hs or college teaching classes related to these, or what is the possibility of becoming a high school teacher in Illinois without a secondary education degree? (do i have to get a certificate, do they make exceptions to people who have been in the field?)

  • Answer:

At the CC level, your professional experience and accolades might work. I'm afraid that public high schools have to follow state law and you'd need a teaching credential to be hired. However, that doesn't mean a degree in education since you have a BS. You'd need to do methodology and student teaching, which would take about a year. The problem is that your major is a "luxury" subject in these days of budget cuts. Most schools don't have the money to hire a teacher for journalism only. An English teacher would do it as an elective. In your place I'd try posh private schools and junior or private 4 year colleges. Places like those would like offering what you could teach.
