How to become a qualified chinese teacher in the USA?

  • Hi Guys! I am a native Chinese speaker from Hong Kong. I want to be a Chinese teacher in the states. I have done a lot of research about how to get certificated. But I also heard that I don't need to be certificated to teach in private(independent) school. Is that true? If I don't need to be certificated to teach in private school, what kind of certificate do I need? I also heard about TCSOL? I am a native Chinese speaker from Hong Kong, I speak both native Cantonese and Mandarin. I have a bachelor degree in journalism and mass communication(I got my degree from Hong Kong) which makes me proficient in both Chinese and English Writing. I have been working in a summer camp in New york for two summers. Thanks!

    Yes, it's true that you don't have to be licensed to teach in private schools. More public schools are adding Chinese, and in many places, they are contracting teachers through the Confucious Institutes that are cropping up at universities. You can check for the location of the institutes at http://college.chinese.cn/en/node_3778.htm Contact the institute near you or near where you want to live, and ask what you can do to be considered as a Chinese teacher in the schools they're working with.

Chinese isn't offered in most American public schools except as an extra activity, which is usually taught by a volunteer parent. It is offered at the college level, so perhaps you can offer private tutoring at nearby colleges or universities. Otherwise, if there is a large Chinese community in your area then visit the schools there and ask how you could become qualified.
