Graduate Membership Alpha Kappa Alpha?

As a future teacher, is phi kappa phi membership worth the cost?

  • I received a phi kappa phi membership invite, and while it seems legit, I'm not sure it's beneficial since I want to go into teaching. Maybe if I was applying to a PhD program (currently in masters/credential program) after I graduate it'd look good, but aside from being a resume builder, which I honestly don't think I need, I'm not sure if the cost of membership is worth it. But on a totally selfish note, the phi kappa phi medallion you get to wear at graduation looks pretty badass. Any advice on this matter is greatly appreciated!

  • Answer:

Congratulations on the invitation and thank you for asking. First, you're right about the medallion as it is quite nice. Second, we hope you will join. As you look into the value Phi Kappa Phi holds for you personally, we hope that you will consider the following: - Your membership helps support the Society's mission and programs, including more than $700,000 awarded annually through scholarships and grants. - Your membership fee may be offset by taking advantage of some of our corporate partner discounts. - Professional networking and training opportunities are available through LinkedIn, Facebook, a biennial convention and more. - As an all-discipline honor society, we include members from all walks of life knowledgeable in many areas of expertise. A love of learning is the common thread among all of our members. Congratulations on on your academic achievements and good luck as you move into your new role in the classroom. Thank you for considering joining The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi.

I don't think it is. It's basically just a resume builder. If you join, you do get more opportunities for volunteer hours, networking, and professional development opportunities. However, in my experience, it wasn't anything special that I couldn't get elsewhere. I can find my own volunteer hours and my College Department offered pretty much the same professional Development. So if you need scholarships, networking, or a resume builder, then go for it. If not, don't bother. I thought it was a pain in the bum. You have to attend their meetings and get so many hours worth of volunteer hours and activity hours, so it just takes up more time than I really had.
