Elementary school teaching is a lot of "kid management", and is more than just English. High school teaching is a lot of "attitude management" and can be English specific if that is your subject matter. Second..decide where there is more of a need. Does the district you intend on teaching in need more high school teachers or elementary school teachers. You can generally tell by accessing a website like city-data.com to see what is the population of the different age groups are in the area you are hoping to teach in. PS if you go on to get a Master in English-after your credential...you may then also be qualified to teach at the Community College depending on the state.

As an instructional coach of Language Arts, I want to assure you: a. there are way too many elementary teachers that became teachers because of a 'love for literature.' The profession does not need 'sages that can take the stages' and preach about literature in the ES. We need professionals that can take the basics of reading (the big 5) and move from skill to skill with ease. b. there are way to many HS English teachers that should have become writers - technical writers. But that doesn't make them a writing teacher. This takes hard work. It takes dedication and a pasion for the application of research based practices. If you are interested in a quality teaching school - you cannot pass over George Fox University.
