  • Answer:

I am a retired elementary principal from Wisconsin. The first question of any interview is almost always asking you to tell the interview committee about yourself. Some typical questions you may hear are: What is your philosophy of education? Why did you want to become a teacher? What are your professional goals? Where do you see yourself in five years/ten years from now? Why were you interested in this position? What do you know about our school district? How do you help a classroom of children, with varying degrees of knowledge and ability, to move ahead in their learning? What special skills/experiences do you possess that you feel make your candidacy a strong one? Name one weakness you have? What is your greatest strength? How do you get an unwilling student to learn? What motivational techniques work best for you to use with your students? Hypothetical situation-Say you come upon a student in the hallway that is crying. When you ask her what is wrong, she tells you she got caught cheating on a test. What do you tell this student? Another hypothetical situation-A student comes up to you and tells you that you are the worst teacher he has ever had. How do you respond to this student? Should a teacher want to be a student's friend? Is it okay for a teacher to teach to a test? Describe your vision of a perfect school? Describe your idea of a master teacher? Tells about the best teacher you ever had and what made this teacher so good? What is your philosophy of discipline? What questions do you have for us in regard to our school district, school and the position for which you are applying? I hope this helps you. Good luck!

Other answers

Don't assume that there is a standard set of questions. Each interview can be different. Be up to date about current problems in education such as NCLB. Study the district website so that you know names, places, and current activities. Be ready to talk about your teaching strengths. How have all your previous experiences prepared you for this job? How will you handle class discipline? How will you utilize technology?

Many interviews include "Are there any questions you would like to ask us?" Your answer can reveal whether you actually know anything about the school/college where you are applying so have some answers ready for that.
