How can I apply for a job at Univision?

How can I apply for a job as a teacher at a university?

  • I'm a Political Science major and though I'm only a sophomore in my second semester, I've been thinking about the kinds of jobs I could apply for. For a project I was doing for one of my classes, I actually found out I could be a teacher with my degree. So, with that said, first off, would I also need a degree in education if I wanted to teach Political Science at a university level? Also, how can I apply for a job at a university? Does the school have to be offering the position (I know that's a stupid question but I want to be thorough)? Who do they offer the jobs to? Do I have to have a Master's degree/go to Grad school in order to work as a teacher at a university? Feedback is much appreciated!

  • Answer:

At the university level, you need to have at LEAST a master's degree in the area you wish to teach in, in this case, PoliSci. You do not need a degree in education, unless you want to become an Ed.D, which is completely different than a Ph.D. A lot of people will tell you degree in education, that is BUNK and limits you to what you can do, they will say minor in what you want to teach, that is BUNK also. EVERY institution wants you to be masterful and have a degree in your SUBJECT matter, so you would get your teaching credentials, and minor in whatever you want, you can minor in education if you wish, you don't have to though, you just need the teacher certs. I would say at a private or prestigious university, you will need a Ph.D, which comes after a Master's degree. You also have to publish articles and write a book or two, to even be elligible for some positions. YOu will need to have ongoing research at universities, though this differs at some schools. Some will have a forty/forty/twenty ratio based on teaching/research/committee work, others emphasize teaching over research, some emphasize research over teaching... it depends on the exact institution. Most universities like you to be well versed in the history of the area/know the area you work in well, though this will not cost you your job... but it will be icing on the cake. those are the basics, but get your degree in polisci in minor in something else, maybe like the history of an area you are getting your polisci degree in.. if it's U.S. Poli Sci, then maybe minor in U.S. history, or some kind of law based minor to reinforce yourself. You do NOT need to minor or Major in education though, you DO need your TEACHER CERTIFICATION though.

You have to have a Ph.D. to teach at a university. With an M.A., you might be able to teach at a community college. You get the degree in Political Science, and then you apply for whatever jobs are open when you graduate. They are always published in some publication in the field- and often in the Chronical of Higher Education. Then you interview. It's very competitive. You have to have excellent grades and some published articles. You have to write a dissertation to get a Ph.D. You are not usually hired by the school where you got your degree.
