How long does it take to become a high school teacher in Canada?

What high school courses should I take if I want to become a middle school teacher?

  • High school orientation begins in a couple months, and I'm looking to teach, preferably middle school students once I graduate. I'm curious about what high school courses I should take if I want to become a teacher.

  • Answer:

I would suggest 2 years of a foreign language. I didn't do that and needed to take 1 year at the college level (at a cost of $3400). Beyond that, it would depend on which area you want to teach. If you want to teach math or science, take as many of those classes as you can. One good place to find out which classes are best is to contact one of the schools where you want to take college courses.

so I should graduate with both my high school diploma and my associates. I plan on talking to my counselor too, but I was just wondering what classes you think would be wise to take. I want to teach English at the high school level. Also, is it possible to be certified to teach multiple subjects? I know the Math and Science fields are in need of more teachers. Would it be possible to become certified to teach English and Biology? If yes, what courses would help me reach that goal? Thanks!

You will have to get a bachelor's degree first before you can teach. If you are positive about the education field, your Bachelor degree should be in Interdisciplinary Studies. Now, if you aren't positive about the education field, get a degree in an area you are interested in. Once you have a bachelor's degree, you can apply for the ACP program. It means Alternative Certification Program and it's for people that did not go through the education courses. Either way, you have to do student teaching and then pass your certification test to teach. I am certified I am certified 4th-8th grade Reading and Writing. Middle school certifications typically don't have generalists (can teach all subjects) anymore. That was old school. So, if you want to teach middle school, your courses will be geared toward your focus/minor (Math, Language Arts, Science, Social Studies..etc.) You will have to take a little of everything, but most will be your focus. Unless your high school is a specialty high school that focuses on careers, there really isn't any specific course you should take. Take your basics and pay attention :) Middle school teaching is not for the faint of heart, but I would never teach anything else :) @Vickey- Yes you can be certified to teach several areas. Once you have your teaching certificate, you can "challenge" the other subject exams without having to take all the courses. If you pass the test, you will gain the certifications.

You should take any courses that pertain to the specific you are planning on teaching. Basically choose electives that are in the teaching career cluster. If you're not familiar with electives that are necessary for becoming a teacher just ask your counselor. He/She is the best resource for choosing electives, not the internet.

Definelty ahead of schedule lol. take regular courses to graduate and once your in college you can choose your major with teaching credentials.
