Career Advice-Social Work/Substitute teaching?

  • I have a BSW in social work, 2004. I live in Michigan.I have worked in two social service agencies as a case manager, since graduation. I really liked the first position but had to relocate. I did not like the second position. Anyways, I am currently working as a General Manager of a hotel and I am looking for a new job. I have sent my resume to a few social service agencies, but to be honest I don't think social work was the best career choice for me! I was thinking of substitute teaching as an option, as I wish I would have gotten a teaching degree. Any advice on substitute teaching? Is it a terrible job as everyone says? I will need a consistant paycheck! I will also take social work career advice as well if anyone has any! Thanks

  • Answer:

I have been a substitute teacher for over 12 years. The average daily pay rate in my part of California is $100 per day. My B.A, is in journalism. I think a varied background in education can bring something good to the teaching table. I obviously love to teach reading and writing. I have a blog devoted to tips and trials involved in this profession: "The Fine Art of Subsitute Teaching" at http://supersubteacher.blogspot.com

Substitute teaching can be a great job for people who enjoy working with students, but don't have a teaching degree. There are some aspects of substitute teaching are difficult, but can be made easier with the appropriate skills. The most daunting task for any teacher is classroom management. It is also difficult to implement another teacher's lesson plan, however these skills can be learned. The best advice I can give to any substitute teacher is to constantly walk around the room and praise students for their appropriate behavior. It is also important to arrive 20 minutes and review the lesson plan and make sure the materials are in order. In case the lesson ends early, it is also helpful to have fill-in activities available. Just some ideas for you. Good luck!
