My child is going to be tested for autism. What's next?

Please help. Child having trouble is school. Could it be APD or something else?

  • Hello. I have a 5 year old son that is in kindergarden. He is a sweet bright boy. But has trouble with things. For one he gets mad very easy. Like if he doesnt win a game or I dont answer him right away. He will over dramatze things and start saying things like I am going to die over and over. He plays good and is very intrested in things. But I think I failed him as a mother cause I was in a abusive relationship for 3 years and I didnt spend one on one time teaching him alot and he sat infront of the tv alot. I lve my son and I cry because of this. He is having trouble at school too. At home he will say his colors numbers, ect but at school he just says I dont know and his teacher acts like I dont work with him. I work with him for 2 plus hours each night and he does great. But as soon as he goes to school it goes out of his mind. My sister lives with me cause of other reasons and she is in 6 th grade and reads on a 2nd grade level and it takes her 3 to 4 hours to do home work. I get so over stress and depress I cry when they get into bed. I dont understand why he cant tell his teacher the right answers. I am going to have him tested for dislexyia and color blindness. But I dont feel he is. He is also in consultion for his temper. I am in a great relationship and I am trying to raise my kids the best I can but I dont know whats wrong with my son:( I read online about APD and he has some of theses signs but he has trouble being constist with his colors and shapes. I feel so hopeless but I have to be strong for them. Pls if anyone has kids with these problems or could give me a ray of hope pls let me know. Thank you

  • Answer:

APD (auditory processing disorder) shouldn't cause trouble with colors... it is too soon to test for dyslexia...many 5 year olds just aren't developmentally ready for reading...the earliest would be near the ends of kindergarten--but more reliable the beginning of 3rd grade... that doesn't mean he can't get support services know.... it could be some school anxiety
