Do I need a B.A. in Special Education?

...to acquire a Special Education teaching credential? I understand the need and requirement for a B.A., but I am unsure if it has to be a Special Education B.A. or any specific B.A.. The reason I ask is because there are not any schools in my area that offer the Special Education B.A. degree program. I plan on possibly getting my M.A. in Special Education as well. I have tried to contact my school, but no response yet. I live in California.

You need a Bachelor's degree in special education. It might be a Bachelor of Science. I find it hard to imagine that there are areas in the United States without colleges offering programs in special education. If you are still in high school or are a recent graduate, you could ask your counselor to help you find an appropriate program. If you have been out of school for some time, you could ask a reference librarian to help you find colleges nearby that offer that certification.

My understanding is that you you need special ed classes for the license in order to be highly qualified. If you got the MA in special ed, then you would be qualified. One does not need a BA in special ed to be accepted to an MA program in special ed. I wonder if you could find an online program that would help you earn the classes you need to be licensed (many programs offer dual license programs in elementary ed and special ed).

No. My BA was a French BA in Economics...When accepted you enter a credential program: 3 years, then 1 more year to clear it.
