Do people with autism act noticeably different?

  • I just learned about autism, but I'm a bit confused. I've heard that people with autism tend to have trouble socializing and/or has a habit of stacking things, following daily routines, lack of emotion, and many other things. But if there is something I am not understanding, a lot of people I know also have a bit of a hard time socializing because they are shy. Following the same routines just seems to me like more of a habit or maybe they just have their own rules to be organized. And if people with autism are really that different, then what are the standards for a person to be normal and not have autism? Do they constantly socialize with everyone and go about doing random activities all the time? So how different are people with autism, or are these just minute differences?

  • Answer:

Not all levels levels of autism make themselves obvious to other people. The awkwardness varies according to the person and the demands that are put on them. Shyness isn't the only problem, if someone rarely speaks, they won't make a lot of social blunders. They difference between autistic people verses non-autisic people is the way the brain processes information. You can't see that from the outside. Those like me who are able to pass as normal for a while often have trouble getting people to belive us that we are autisic. But if you get to know me well enough to get pass the shyness, you will be able to check traits of autisim right off of a list as you talk to me.

there are many levels of autism. Some can function by themselves and hold a job, some can not. Being autistic means much more than just having trouble socializing. do some research on line or at the library

The hallmarks of autism are 1. language impairments, 2. a lack of social reciprocity or sharing in relationships, and 3. restricted interests or stereotyped behavior. Each person with autism is different, but the main difference in the social skills is more with the ability to make relationships. For example, a quiet person would want friends but is just shy. Someone with autism would have poor eye contact, trouble reading emotions, have trouble seeing other people's perspectives, and not really be as interested in others. As for the routine, its more than just being organized. A break in the routine can cause a meltdown for someone with autism- they tend to struggle with changes. Often times, people with autism can speak in an unusual way- either with no emotion or placing emotion in weird parts of their sentences. Some people with autism develop limited speech and use sign or picture systems to communicate. Depending on how severe their condition, the differences between someone with autism and a neurotypical person can be very noticeable or they may just seem "awkward."
