What is financial aid disbursement?

Why is my disbursement check for the full amount of my financial aid?

  • To sum this up, I got $8000 in financial aid for this current fall semester and the upcoming spring semester. My first semester cost $3500 after classes, books, etc. The spring semester is likely to cost the same. That being said, I would have $1000 leftover and figured that they would send me that for my disbursement check. Instead, I just received a check for the remaining $4500. Is there a mistake? Shouldn't they be keeping that for me to register for classes or am I just supposed to cash the check and then pay for the spring semester "out of pocket" with it? I'm confused.

  • Answer:

If $8000 was the award for "this semester" and is stated as such, that is your award. It is probably designed to cover room, board and incidentals (laptop, internet service, heat, phone, etc). Simply call the financial aid office and ask "is this PER SEMESTER? or PER YEAR?" Bonus if it's per semester. Don't party your *** off and get good grades.
