Applying to a Canadian college?

Do I Fill out FAFSA before or after applying to college?

  • After 10 years of being out of high school I finally want to make the leap to go to college. I haven't applied to any colleges or even been in one to talk to anyone, but I'm at the signing and submitting point in my FAFSA. I was wondering can I do this now or should I go and talk to someone at the college I want to go to? I'm not applying for a SUNY college, just a community college. This is all new and foreign to me and would appreciate any help I can get in figuring this out. Also, I know it's September and school has already started and I'm curious if I can start in the second semester in January (or is it February) and still get financial aid, or if I have to wait until next fall to start in order to get financial aid?

  • Answer:

Turn in your FAFSA as soon as possible. Make sure you are also in the process to attend the community college of your choice. Such as filing out your application, taking the admissions test, seeing a counselor for your educational plan, signing up for your classes, etc. When the financial aid reviews your class schedule and see's that you are not enrolled full time then you will NOT receive financial aid. You may have to wait until the Spring 2012 school semester to start, but make sure your in the process of enrolling yourself in the community college NOW. Fill out your FAFSA first because sometimes it takes them awhile to accept you.

Princess Jasmine

You are filing extremely late for this year. The closest to Jan 1 you file maximizes your award. http://bellarminearc.wordpress.com/2011/01/10/file-your-fafsa-early-this-year-and-heres-why/ So you will get significantly less filing so late. When you fill out the FAFSA just list all the colleges you may be applying to and they will send your SAR to them when they process your FAFSA. Those to which you apply will use your SAR in order to create and award for you. http://studentaid.ed.gov/students/attachments/siteresources/Funding_Education_Beyond_HS_2011-12.pdf (they update this every year, here is this years one)
