Can you have more than one Stafford loan at the same time?

Can I take out another stafford loan when i already have one out that i have started paying off yet?

  • Ok So here is the deal about a year in a half ago I decided to start going to school I wasn't 24 yet and I had to still use my parents income leaving me with only $350 in grants and the rest had to be taken out in loans. I ended up taking out $1700 and I only went to school for a couple of quarters because I found that school and trying to work a full time job was way to stressful on me. now a year and a half later that loan is currently in deferment because I have been in and out of jobs now I have a stable job and have started paying some of it off. I am aiming to get back into school in the spring but have to apply for financial aid in January. My question is can I still get grants and or take out another Stafford loan if I need it or do I have to first completely pay off the money that I already owe before I can do that?

  • Answer:

hsfromthestart is correct. You can take out additional stafford loans, as long as you are not in default and not at your maximum aggregate limit (Which $1700 is nowhere close to.) You can also have the loan go into deferment once you are enrolled for 6 or more credit hours.

Students generally take out new loans each school year without paying off the previous ones yet. Aslong as you aren't in default, there shouldn't be a problem.
