Question regarding instate vs. out of state tuition...?!?!?!?
-
My gov't teacher said there's some type of way that students basically cheat the system (without it technically being illegal) when it comes to having their parents live in a state, the child goes out of state for some school or to live, but has like some form of ID, mail, something that lets the child be able to qualify for the instate tuition if they plan on going back to a school in that state, even though they have not lived their for that minimum time required for you to qualify for the instante tuition, the state that their parents live in, even though they did not live there...I hope you understand what I'm trying to say. Does anyone know what he is talking about??? and can you clarify? THANKS! :)

Answer:
Your govt teacher is talking about fraud. You cant cheat the system. Financial aid is a govt thing and they can see where you reside, work, file taxes, driver;s license etc. If you provide false information that is fraud and you could get in trouble legally and never be able to get aid again. See if your state partcipates in this program for out of state tuition at instate cost: http://www.sreb.org/page/1304/academic_common_market.html

It's about more than things like mail. Normally, if you're a dependent student - you rely on your parents, financially - it's where your parents live that matters re: residency for tuition. And if your parents file taxes in state X, work in state X, have a home in state X, it'd be very, very, very hard for you to find a way to scam the system that "the system" would believe.

your residency is based on where your parents live until a certain age (usually 24 in most states)... it doesn't matter where you live... sorry. Your govt teacher is incredibly wrong and prob trying to convince all the students stupid enough to believe him to leave to go to another state so he doesn't have to teach you.
