Where can I apply for Grants and Scholarships?

Where can I go to apply for the federal & state scholarships & grants that I hear the gov't doesn't give away?

  • People keep telling me that there are millions of dollars that the government allots each year for college that don't get awarded. I must be Googling the wrong thing because I'm not coming up with much. I completed our FAFSA in January but I haven't received anything from that. It would be nice to get a chunk of those funds to pay for college. PS - We don't qualify for the Pell Grant, so that rules out a lot of them.

  • Answer:

If you don't qualify for the pell grant then you won't qualify for any federal grants. It doesn't matter if there's millions sitting around that no one claims (which there isn't). State grants sometimes require a separate application but most states do not have their own grant programs. You can find out if yours does by calling your school's financial aid department. You must be going to an in-state school to get state grant money. Scholarships are another story. Usually these unclaimed scholarships you hear about are only a few hundred dollars and they are usually local awards and your high school counselor probably has information about those.
