How long does Fafsa pay for education?

Student Financial Help. FAFSA: Student Loans?

  • My story: I graduated from college about 10 years ago. I was a nontraditional full time and even though I worked to support my education I accrued a hefty sum of student loans. I planned to pay my debt quickly, but my husband lost his steady job (of 8 years) to a recession. Thus, I have not been able to pay my debt. A few years ago I consolidated my Stafford loans through ACS. I still have a balance about 22,000 dollars. I have a child on his second year of college and another one starting next fall. My husband and I work 4 jobs altogether, so when we filled out fafsa it looks like we have enough money to provide for our kids college. Both boys have worked summer jobs to help with their books and other expenses. So, again, it shows that we should have enough money to help. My oldest have never been able to get grants. My question: Would Fafsa know that I have pending student loans? Would having -myself- student loans would help my kids qualify for some fafsa grants?
