Where can I get a student loan?

  • I applied for a student loan at my bank but got denied because I owe money to a school already. I have to pay to a collections agency. I called and asked them what I could do to get my loan in good standing so I could take out a loan but the person on the phone told me I had to pay the entire debt first before I can take out a loan form anywhere. I was wondering if that is true? If not, then where would be the best place to get a student loan other than my school or bank?

    If you are dealing with collection agency, most likely you already have a pretty bad credit score. You won't likely to get another loan until you debt is settled. Make sure the collection agency taking out the record from your credit history as part of the agreement. You can do Fafsa after you clear the loan you have not. Beside school and bank, it is unlikely for you to get a student loan

If you are trying to get a loan in the near future, then yes you would have to pay out the entire amount otherwise, you will have to get it out of default (however much to do that) and then make on-time payments for a couple of years (I think it is 3 years) to be eligible for student loans again otherwise, you won't be eligible for any kind of student loan

If you are in default with a federal loan, you will not be able to get another loan, either private or federal. Your best bet is trying to win some scholarships. Try using ScholarshipExperts.com or Collegeboard.org. Otherwise, you will probably have to take fewer classes and get a job to help pay back the debt and your current classes.
