How Do I Get A Government Grant?

After applying for a government grant, how long does it take to get the check in your mailbox?

  • Not a pell grant, a regular government grant.

  • Answer:

The timing of your receipt of any grant depends largely upon the speed of your university's financial aid department. Once you are approved and have signed any necessary paperwork, it shouldn't take long for your school to receive the funds (maybe a week or so). After that, the waiting game continues as your school applies the money to your account, paying any remaining tuition or fees you may have, and eventually refunds you the balance. If you haven't already, I highly recommend asking your financial aid representative about direct deposit to your checking account, as this speeds up the refund process by anywhere from 2 to 10 days. If you don't have a checking account, your university probably has a bank branch in your student center or elsewhere on campus that would be happy to open one for you.

The Pell grant is the ONLY government grant available to individuals... there are no "regular" government grants.
