Pell grant, independent, but not working? status question?
-
For the record, I'm 26, legally seperated. I'm receiving pell grant this year because I did have an income in 2009. However for 90% of 2010 I did not work when i became pregnant with my daughters (bed rest, at 3 months, multiple pregnancy) I do plan on going back to work part time at the start of next year when my girls are a bit older and can be put in day care. Here is the situation: I have been legally separated from my girls father since may of 2010. We share custody and there is no child support involved on either side we just share the bills ( I pay bills currently by blowing through my savings & live with my mother and sister) He will fill taxes this year claiming both girls as dependents (theres no issue there it was a mutual decision) Because I will not file taxes this coming year (january 2011) due to having no income this past year to file how do I apply for Pell grant for the 2010-2011 semester without filling a tax return and having no income?

Answer:
The first answer is confused. If you work for the entire year, you will not have to file taxes if you make under $6,000 for the year. I have not filed taxes in two years, I know! So even if you did work for some percentage of the year, you will not have to file unless you wages exceed the above amount. Do not put random numbers. When you fill out your FAFSA, chose "Will Not File" from the drop down menu. You need to have a real calculation of bills payed on your behalf, your mother buying your food is not a bill paid on your behalf, the question refers to things like rent and utilities that are paid to a business or landlord, real bills, as in ones that you are physically billed. If your mother is watching your kids you don't put that either, only put childcare expenses if you are paying a daycare or babysitter. I know where you are coming from, but those things, your mother helping you out, is not something that you file on your tax return, and the FAFSA is only a copy of a tax return. Now. Because you will not file taxes, you will automatically be selected for verification, so go ahead and print the Verification Worksheet off of the school's financial aid website, you can also get it in their office. That is where you will write in the amount of money that you made in the 10%, or whatever, of the year that you worked.

"However for 90% of 2010 I did not work when i became pregnant with my daughters" That means that the other 10% of 2010 you DID work and DID have an income. This means you need to file taxes and get all the taxes that were withheld given back to you in an income tax refund. That is YOUR money and there is absolutely NO reason you should be just GIVING it to the government! LOL It is possible to fill out a fafsa without filing taxes, you simple select "Will not file" when it asks about your tax form. There is a question that asks, how much "money was paid on your behalf" and you need to come up with a dollar amount to put in that question. Because the fin aid office will select you verification as they think this is an error on your part (how did you not starve or be homeless for the entire 2010 year). Also be aware that with no income (although not working 90% of the year means you DID have an income, like I said) but if you insist you had no income, you would not be able to put your daughters down on fafsa form (if you had no income you would not have been able to provide any of their support, much less the HALF that is required to list them on your fafsa). So ONE in the household and ONE in college on your fafsa is the correct answer to these questions when it asks. The school will also likely require you to get a statement from the Social Security office stating your wages (or lack thereof) for the 2010 school year. So be sure you don't "Forget" about a job you had worked at early in the year, they'll know you are lying! PS: You will be selected for verification, so be sure you pay attention and in all your paperwork quickly and accurately as soon as possible. Also be sure you are VERY committed to doing school right now... it sounds like you do have a lot of family help, but starting school with two babies isn't going to be easy!! Better wait and be sure you are ready then start when you are not. Good luck. EDIT: No income is NO (ZERO) income. I'm sorry, but $800.00 in January is an income. File taxes and get that cash back. It's yours and its money to do with as you with. No, you don't put a random number, you need to put a pen to paper and calculate how much your Mom pays to support you (not a month, the fafsa wants a YEARLY amount) and put that yearly amount down on your fafsa. When it asks about your tax form, you should put, "WILL FILE" and then when you get your W2 form from your employer on Feb 1st, do your taxes get your refund and do your fafsa. You will have to prove that "amount paid on your behalf" to the school by filling out their paperwork and turning in paperwork if they ask. They will give you a worksheet to fill out and return... but you won't get it until AFTER you do your fafsa.
