What exactly is financial aid and how do you get it?

How can I get more financial aid to pay the balance on my daughters financial Aid? She goes to Winthrop Univer?

  • My daughter goes to Winthrop University and is a her second year there, she gets financial aid, Pell grant and work study. This fall she has a balance of $3700 that financial aid did not cover, and I don't understand why. They set up payments per month that I told them I could not pay and I am single parent with no other income coming except what I make, which isn't enough to pay over $1400 per month on this balance. I have tried everything, other loan companies ect. to get some help to pay this off so she will be able to stay in college. Is there anything out there that could help a single mother pay this balance off, I tried even pleading and begging with the university for some more help and how did she have a balance when she's on financial aid assistance. I am in great need of help. I really an answer to help me so I can pay this balance off. When I tried the loan companies due to my bad credit history due to hospital bills and late payments on my bills-which happens when you are a single parent with no help from the system, I am unable to get a loan to help out and since she only does work study at the university we can't get help and no one I know will cosign at all. I am in need of help to pay this off, if there are some organizations that can help us I could like to know which ones so I can get in contact with them as soo as possible.

  • Answer:

She should work the weekends. This is a good idea. She should also apply for all the scholarships she can find. The financial aid officer is her best friend right now. They have access to information for many different scholarships. She may have to write an essay for each one. She can write one good essay and alter it to fit the other scholarships. After she gets through the first two years of college, she may be eligible for larger federal loans. She needs to be careful here and only borrow what she needs. Don't over borrow. Also, she may think about transferring to a community college to get an associates degree. Community college are usually cheaper. Then she can transfer back to the university when she is eligible for higher loans, and then work on her bachelor's degree.

Balance of 3700 a semester!? Like 3,700 dollars!? Or did you mean 37,000!? If it's 37,000 then she needs to transfer to a state university for low tuition ASAP. In state schools are usually about 10k a year, which Im sure financial aid would cover most. 37,000 is a ridiculous amount to pay for tuition. Forget a "dream" school. If it's 3,700 then she can pay that just by having an additional weekend fast food job, that would is a VERY low amount. I worked 35-42 hours a week while taking 15-18 credit hours. You do what you gotta do, well worth it, graduated in '10and now make 50k/yr. Edit: not you, HER. She can easily work an additional weekend job. It's called time management and focus. She should be thinking of solutions now, not you. Cut the cord.

Be careful Sampson sounds like it could be a scam. My advice to you is to budget your money. Clark Howard the Financial expert on CNN mentioned this free program: https://www.mint.com/how-it-works/ Also make sure you file your FAFSA early every year Jan 1 to maximize your award: http://bellarminearc.wordpress.com/2011/01/10/file-your-fafsa-early-this-year-and-heres-why/ Have you tried for all of this aid: http://www.che.sc.gov/New_Web/GoingToCollege/FinAsst.htm If you cant get any more money then you may want to have her transfer to a cheaper college. Also keep in mind your state participates in a program where she can go to participating states in the same program and attend college for instate price: http://www.sreb.org/page/1304/academic_common_market.html Work study usually does not give you that much money, I think my daughter was offered 1000.00 (which means 500 per semester only). She denied it and got a job instead where she works 12-15 making about 5000 a year. (note that is how much a student can make before it starts effecting their financial aid ).
