Should I get e-books or traditional printed paper books for grad school?

  • I am starting graduate school in September (MBA program). I am trying to decide whether or not to go with e-books or printed books. Besides the price (one of my books is $89 e-book; $195 printed) - the convenience seems to be a high decision point! I always purchased printed books as an undergrad - something about "having" the book in my possession was... 'nice'? However, as I look back on my PILE of old textbooks - I realize they appear mostly brand new. I probably could have easily gotten away with e-books as an undergrad. My question, however, is whether or not the use of textbooks in an MBA program is much greater than undergrad? Will I regret not having a textbook to read and highlight the pages of, insert paperclips and post-its? This may seem like a strange question but I would like to know what sort of experience other MBA students had with e-books versus paper books. I have been reading previews of my textbooks online - just to get an idea and see if I will like e-books... But this is just leisurely reading - not taking notes, semester pressures, etc. Also important to mention: I take courses 100% online - undergrad and graduate (same school) - Therefore, I don't have to lug textbooks around - only my laptop. I am a stay-at-home mom running a web and marketing firm (from home) so travel or commuting is not an issue. Thank you for any advice/tips/ideas/input!

    As long as your e-book reader allows you to search, do highlighting and make notes, then yes, the savings on one or two texts will pay for the reader. However, not all books are available in electronic format.

I am not getting an MBA. However I am in grad school. I have done both. One I did for the cost because I don't plan on using the book that much. Most of the time I buy the book. I like being able to flip through the book. Some online books you can highlight or put note in. I would suggest you try it and see if you like it. Buy one and then do another online.
