How to get into UNC Chapel Hill?

  • I really want to go to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and was wondering what are some good techniques for impressing admissions officers. Also what did you do to get into Chapel Hill? What would be a good GPA to keep and what would be a good class rank and good extra curricular activities to join. Thank you so much for your help!

  • Answer:

There really aren't any techniques to impress admissions officers other than to actually be impressive. They review thousands of applications and can see through attempts to overstate qualifications. Pretty much any extracurricular is good. If you can get a leadership role (president, treasurer, etc), that's good because it shows leadership and dedication. Merely joining a group shows interest. You should have an unweighted GPA of at least 3.75. Definitely be in the top 25%, if not the top 10% of your class. You should have an SAT score no less than 1800 and ACT score of at least 27. Being an NC resident helps too.

To get into UNC, you will need the following ingredients: a strong GPA, good test scores, solid extracurricular activities, and great essays. Here are some more specific "Cooking Instructions": First, add one pound of 3.7+ unweighted GPA with honors/AP/IB class seasoning. Next, pour in a 2000+ SAT (or 30+ ACT) sauce. Third, chop up some delicious extracurricular activities, and dump them into the mix. Make sure these activities are "fresh" (i.e. you are passionate about your activities) and "top-of-the-line" (i.e. you hold leadership positions/demonstrate leadership in your activities). After, top off your ingredients with a creative and personal essay--yum! The food critics (admission officers) always love a good essay. Finally, stir all of your ingredients together and let them cook for four years. Good Luck, and hope you enjoyed the metaphor!

Get your grades up as high as you can, (you can keep track of this with a site like GPAsaver.com), kill the ACT/SAT and hope for the best. The system is largely driven by USNWR rankings and medians but there are still some holistic elements which you should capitalize on (write good essays, weave a good story together).
