Which college major would help me with Critical Thinking most?

Thinking of majoring in music in college, help?

  • There is really nothing I want to do really do, besides music. I'm going to be a freshmen this year at a community college in my town. I was thinking of psychology but I'm still not sure. I just don't exactly know what I would like to do as far as music goes. I don't want to compose my own music, seeing as that'd be extremely hard, and I don't want to teach either, because I hate teaching in general. I play three instruments and music is everything to me.. I was thinking something along the lines of a booking agent or sound technician...or something to do with recording music? Can someone please give me some ideas? Or if you have majored in music, help me out? I know it doesn't really pay good, but the money isn't a big deal, I just want something that I could make a decent living off of. thanks :)

  • Answer:

I go to Monmouth University in West Long Branch, NJ and they have an AWESOME Music Industry program! The students learn songwriting, record production, marketing, booking, etc. They have internships with recording companies, venues, etc. and usually land pretty good jobs in the industry. If you're interested in majoring in Music but don't know what to do, I think a double major in Music Industry and Business/Marketing would be good! I'm personally a Music Ed major, but if your heart isn't in it, it's not worth starting the degree lol. My boyfriend is actually in the Music Industry program with a double major in Marketing and he loves it. He hopes to either work in a venue or as a music scout, which would be AWESOME. Good luck!

I went to community college and transferred to NYU where I had a lot of friends who were successful music majors. At this point, I think you should focus on getting your core classes out of the way so when you transfer, you can focus on your major, music. Then, you can decide where you want to take your degree because it is going to come down to the people around you and networking to get you some serious success in the industry. Don't. There's no money in it. Major in music education or something.
