Should I major in Animal Science or International Business?

I am considering switching my major from business to biomedical science. I Currently have a 3.1 GPA?

  • I am a sophomore majoring in business economics, I like it, but I have also taken a couple biology classes. I have been considering switching my major to biomedical science in hopes of going to medical school. I am a smart kid, however I did not transition well into my freshman year of college scoring a 2.0 my first semester and a 3.0 in my second and a 3.7 in my third, and this semester I am looking at a 3.5. How much of a negative effect will the GPA from my first year while studying economics hurt me even if I do well in biomedical biology if I were to apply to medical school in the future?

  • Answer:

It will for the most part depend on your MCAT score and your overall GPA. I suspect that many of the top medical schools like Harvard, Yale, Mayo, Northwestern & John Hopkins will be out of reach. However other schools will most likely be in your reach if you finish with at least a 3.5 GPA. If you do not get the grades or the MCAT scores needed then you your options could be going to physician assistant school or doing graduate work in order to enhance your application.

A perfect 4.0 GPA in your last two semesters before applying to Medical School (during your fourth year), would leave you with a cumulative GPA of 3.45 According to standard charts, with a 3..45 GPA, you would need an MCAT score of ~32 for a 50% chance of getting at least one Medical School acceptance. Only ~15% of MCAT exam takers score 32 or better. So, it appears the odds are strongly against you.
