Can you transfer from a state University to a private college?

Should I go to a state college or community college and transfer to a university?

  • I live in California. I plan on going to med school. I haven't been getting the best grades (some issues in life I had to deal with) to get in a UC, but I definetly can go to a state college. Is it better to go to a 2 year CC then transfer to a UC like Davis or Berkely? Or go straight a State college? Money isn't a big issue. I just want to know what's my best route to getting into med school. PS- I'm definetly going to my counselor to talk about this. I just want something to think about before I go to her.

  • Answer:

Going to a CC is the best route. I am doing the same thing. It is cheaper overall, closer to home, less stressful, and you can go ahead and take all your pre-requisite courses at half the cost you would pay taking the same things at the university. Especially with med students it is better at a CC. You can take the rudimentary courses and really get a feel for the career. Also, if you want to change your career, it isn't too much of a waste. Although the CC's are less formal than a U, the quality may be lower as well. Such as teachers being less educated or not having the right classes. I think it's a good choice though.

Fast track? Go to a State School and get a BS in human physiology/biology/chemistry or at least the right prerequisites and enough credits to apply to med school... Or Since your grades aren't so hot, go to CC and take your time to get good grades and transfer to the state school to get the BS/upper division credits. I would try to work/volunteer in a hospital for while before deciding on Med school. I think you will be surprised the realities of health care and what working with sick people are all about. I also think you would become a better doctor with knowledge/experience about caring for people. Also remember, med school is 4 years plus 4 years plus residency. That means no life/family/children until your 30's.

The smartest idea here is to attend community college. You save a lot of money by knocking off your GE. With this economic turmoil, you'll be lucky if the state college you plan on attending is offering sufficiently enough courses to its freshman class. If you attend a CC, your likely hood of attending a U.C. is more helpful. Make sure to nail the greater grades to increase your chances.
