How is life as a pastry chef?

Did I just screw up my life?

  • I missed my opportunity to go to a 4-year university, even though I had a 3.8 gpa in high school. I'm so upset. I can still attend community college and earn an AA in computer-science: and if that doesn't work, I could go into: - baking/pastry chef - sushi cook - photography - wall painting - tile and marble setting Can I still have a good-life...? What can you recommend...?

  • Answer:

I hope you realize that going to a CC and transferring to a 4 year university will only save you money. Get a 3.8 in CC while your classes are still easy then transfer with an inflated GPA. Then you will have something to lean back on if you fall behind after you transfer. You will save a lot of money as well. CC classes only cost a fraction of what any Uni costs. *Desiree is wrong. The maximum federal Pell Grant for any college for any student is $5,551. That is exactly what I get and Im in CC. When I transfer this Fall to UCSD, I will be getting the same amount. Pell Grant amount is not determined by what school you go to, it is determined by your (and your supporting family's) financial situation.

You did not miss you oppurtunity silly! Cut offs are only passed for certain tier 1 colleges. There are Tier 2 colleges that auto-accept a student with a 3.0+ GPA or 3.25+ If you think its too late because you missed your SATs then don't worry some schools just have the GPA requirement. Some schools have no out-of-state tuition like Eastern Oregon University, its only $5400 for all students, your PELL grant can cover tuition! Run a search on state schools with no out of state tuition and put them on your FAFSA. check out EOU.edu for what courses they offer. This is my back up school incase I get rejected from U of O. You will find you meet and exceed all their Freshman requirements :). 3.0, 2 HS years foreign language etc... You have until June to fill out your FAFSA, its totally fine don't freak dude. If your parents are too rich for you to get FAFSA grants, don't worry schools have merit based scholarships and low interest rate loans to be paid AFTER graduation. And you can get on SNAP (food stamps) if you cannot find work. You want a cheaper school if you have to pay it all yourself anyways. Every college has a financial office with counselors to help you get the money you need so that you don't stress about cash while trying to keep your grades up. You'll be fine go get that education if you want too! Its not too late :) You really want to shield yourself from depression-level numbers of national unemployment right now anyways, and just stay in school. There is already a butt load of unemployed people with a degree trying to feed their kids. Namely my husband, we do not want to compete with an 18 year old kid LOL! You will be more marketable for employment with a degree. As a kid you are probably a little aloof as to how tough it really is out here, so do yourself the favor of staying in school. *Its not entirely true about a CC saving you money. You will qualify for a smaller financial package at a CC. No matter how expensive your school is, you still need to eat the same amount. A 4-year will get you more grant money (and loan money if you need it) So it evens out.
