Questions about college scholarships?

College/Scholarship HELP!?

  • I was wondering if anyone had any ideas about scholarships I could apply for. My school notifies students of scholarships, but they are mostly "grades aren't everything" scholarships. I'm a high school junior. I plan to attend UCLA or USC. I want to major in film. (If I go to USC, I want to minor in Popular Music as well.) I live in California, and I would like to stay in California for college. Weighted GPA: 4.6 Unweighted GPA: 3.92 Class Rank: 2 out of about 770 SAT Score: 2200 (first try) SAT sub scores: 660 in Critical Reading, 750 in Math, 790 in Writing (77 for MC, 10 for essay) I took the ACT, but I haven't gotten my score back yet. I've taken 2 SAT 2's so far: Bio & Chem (both 750) and I'm planning on taking Physics, US History, and Math 2 this year. AP's: Bio (4), AP Human Geography (4), Chem (4), Euro (3) This year I'm taking AP US History, AP Physics, and AP Language & Composition (Along with Honors PreCalculus and Journalism). Next year I'm taking AP Government & Economy, AP Calculus, and AP Literature & Composition (Along with Journalism). I also take classes at the local community college: Spanish 101 during Summer 2011 (I earned an A) I'm currently taking Spanish 102, and I plan to take ASL 101, ASL 102, and Stats. I'm in my church choir. I'm very active in my church community. I attended a catholic school (elementary) for about a total of 5 years. I love to sing. I play guitar. I write my own songs. I love to write (creatively--eg: novels, scripts for movies or TV shows, ideas for movies, TV, books). I'm a part of Key Club, NHS (National Honors Society), and CSF (California Scholarship Federation) at my school. I'm one of the two website editors for my school newspaper (This is my second year in Journalism). The one issue I've found myself having in scholarships is I never seem to have time to, for example, write the essay for the scholarship, or fill out the application summarizing my community service). So basically, my questions are: 1. What colleges would be good for me? (What could I get into? What would be good for my intended major?) 2. What scholarships would you suggest me applying to? 3. Do you have any other suggestions/advice? Sorry for the long question. Thank you! :)

Love people like you (metaphorically). I would kill for your type of grades as I am a senior in HS as well and I could never compete with you academically haha. But I have advice for you and I hope it helps you on your college search. USC and UCLA are very hard schools to get into and although your grades are great, you need backups. Most of the best colleges with film majors are high ranked schools though so I hope you can get into one of them. I take it that you want to go to school in CALI so research a few other schools in the state just in case because you never know. APPLY TO YOUR SCHOOLS OF CHOICE ASAP. Applying early can be the difference in scholarship money that will save you a decade of debt. Please don't miss those opportunities. Figure out when early admission is for your schools of choices and act quickly. As for scholarships, apply for them online using sites like fastweb and wiredscholar. Although I must say that usually people dont win those types of public scholarships since millions of kids know about it. But you never know what could happen so look them up and apply to as many as possible. If you win a few of them, they can cover your textbooks, food etc. FASFA FASFA FASFA. This will save you too. Do not miss the FASFA deadline. That is the Govt Grants that students can relieve and since you are looking at very expensive schools, youll need the help. Last set of advice. Ask your schools of choice or research these two stats: Default Rate (how many students go bankrupt from their loans) and Indebtedness at graduation (How much money do you owe the school in total). The Tuition numbers can be misleading. Figuring out how much money you will have to pay in the end is far more important. I Hope this helps you and good luck on your college search. Sorry for the long answer but i love helping people.

Well, if you want to go to UCLA or USC, then GO FOR IT! Just looking at your incredible accomplishments in high school are impressive. I think that whatever college you want to go to will be glad to admit you with your incredible grades and aspirations. The first thing to do if you want scholarships is apply to the schools! Then visit each school's financial aid office website (I've included them in the sources below to USC & UCLA, but here they are too: http://www.fao.ucla.edu/uclascholarships/ http://www.usc.edu/admission/fa/grants_scholarships/ ). Copy & paste each school's website and look at the different scholarships available. Then, click on each scholarship to see if it shows what the requirements are for each scholarship. You'll probably have to apply for each one, possibly write an essay, and maybe have an interview with a financial aid counselor. If the websites don't provide the information you want or need, or if you have other questions, get a phone number or email that you can contact the financial aid office with, and then call them. Ask to speak to a financial aid counselor! Let them know your goals and accomplishments (like your GPA, SAT score, & extracurricular activities). Ask the counselor which scholarships you can apply for. They will know about federal, state, and local scholarships. Then, apply for as many as you'd like (the more the better). It would seem to me that, with your credentials, you'll be able to get several scholarships. Do this with each counselor at each school and make sure to ask which scholarships are available for academic achievement, which are available for freshmen only, and which are available for leadership. This could also help you with knowing which school to attend. It is possible that, because of your great test scores and grades, that you'll receive a scholarship from one or both of the schools as incentive to go there. So, as you are going through the admissions process, make sure to check any boxes that will include you for consideration for any scholarships they give to students applying for admission. I hope that this helps you on your way. Good Luck!

Did you know that many scholarship essays can be used for multiple scholarship applications? That will save you lots of time. Put your heart and soul into an essay and let the judges get to know you through your writing. Make sure you make copies of all your scholarship applications because this information can also be used to quickly fill out other scholarship apps. You have amazing grades, test scores, and extra curricular involvement, so you should have lots to write about. As for finding scholarships, borrow a few of the scholarship listing books that you can find at your local library and focus on scholarships that have to do with your future college major and interests. You can find scholarships in those books that are not found through online scholarship matching websites. Also, local scholarships have much less competition, so be sure to apply for as many of those as you can. Good luck! :)
