The first consideration is finding a veterinary technology degree program that is AVMA accredited. This is an extremely important factor because in most states you cannot become a veterinary technician without a degree from an AVMA accredited program. Then you should contact your state veterinary technician association to get advice on which of the programs in your state have the best reputation because there can be quite a bit of variation in AVMA accredited programs. You can also contact the programs and ask them what their graduation rate is and the passing rate of their students on the Veterinary Technician National Exam. All AVMA accredited programs are required to keep these kinds of statistics and that information can be extremely useful in determining if you want to enter that program. If their graduation rate is low, then you have to wonder if there is a reason so many students don't make it all the way through the program.
