What is a Vet Tech and what do they do?

What are some good vet tech colleges? What happens when i go to a vet tech school for 4 years?

  • i really need help. i've been looking at lots but i dunno what are some good choices.

  • Answer:

In terms of getting a job, it usually does not often matter to which vet tech school you went. By far the best value are public community colleges and vocational schools. If you complete a four-year program, you might be able to start at higher pay and might also have an easier time finding a job, but this would be at the cost of two extra years of college in addition to not earning the pay of a vet tech for two more years.

The first consideration is finding a veterinary technology degree program that is AVMA accredited. This is an extremely important factor because in most states you cannot become a veterinary technician without a degree from an AVMA accredited program. Then you should contact your state veterinary technician association to get advice on which of the programs in your state have the best reputation because there can be quite a bit of variation in AVMA accredited programs. You can also contact the programs and ask them what their graduation rate is and the passing rate of their students on the Veterinary Technician National Exam. All AVMA accredited programs are required to keep these kinds of statistics and that information can be extremely useful in determining if you want to enter that program. If their graduation rate is low, then you have to wonder if there is a reason so many students don't make it all the way through the program. The same with a low VTNE pass rate--why are their students not passing this test? You can find a list of AVMA accredited programs here: http://www.avma.org/education/cvea/vettech_programs/vettech_programs.asp As for what happens when you go to a 4 year program, you get a more in-depth degree. You may or may not make more money depending on where you are employed but your pool of possible job opportunities will grow with a 4 year degree. For example, with a 4 year degree you may be eligible for teaching jobs in veterinary technology degree programs.
