Should I transfer to another university?
-
I am from Virginia and I just transferred to Penn State University this August. I really thought PSU was the school for me, and I was really looking forward to going here after two years of community college, but now that I am here, I just don't know. I seem to be allergic to Pennsylvania itself; I am on three types of allergy medication and my doctor is considering putting me on shots because I keep getting sick (sinus infections, ear infections, etc.) I have never been this sick in my life. I am a member of a lot of clubs, but outside of these clubs and my classes, I find myself bored and stuck in my dorm all the time. I find there isn't really much to do here and most people just drink a lot - something I don't do at all. I love my classes and a degree from PSU is looked upon really positively - these are the only two things keeping me here, it seems. I don't want to have to pay almost $40,000 dollars for each of the two years I am here if I am just going to be sick all of the time and bored. I think I have done all that I can do to not feel bored/unhappy, but it doesn't seem to be working. I feel like maybe if I go back to Virginia, and go to a school there, I might be happier. Do you think I should transfer? And if so, to where in Virginia? I was thinking possibly Virginia Commonwealth Uni. or Mary Washington Uni. Thanks, Erika

Answer:
I am in college from Virginia also, I go to a community college right now and I have a friend that goes to Penn State also. I can understand how you feel. However, you should transfer only if you transfer for Spring Semester. I can definately tell you if you come back to Virginia, no matter what school you would feel like you were more comfortable. However, that is the feeling that you get when you know you are far away from Virginia. Virginia is mostly commuter, meaning that everyone commutes to and from thier colleges EVERY weekend, and so if you come back here you will NOT be stuck in a dorm! I don't think you should transfer to VCU because of the overall atmosphere and if you don't have friends there it will feel as if you are socially empty, but that is just my opinion! UMW has good academics and socially its about the same as VCU. Unless you know people there, its going to be hard to make friends there since practically everyone is from Virginia.
