What does an Enhanced Language Requirement for a major mean?

  • I was looking at UTA's requirements for their B.A. in Linguistics and one of the requirements is an Enhanced Language Requirement. Here's what is says on their site: Enhanced Language Requirement "The enhanced language requirement consists of coursework that covers the first year, second year, and third year levels of instruction in a single language. This requirement is equivalent of three years of language instruction, up to and including six hours at the 3000-level in a single language, where that language is not English and is not the student's home language. Classical, modern, signed or indigenous (for example, Native American) languages are all permissible languages to satisfy this requirement." Maybe I'm just thinking too hard about this, but what does it mean? Does it mean that I need three academic, or full, years of a single language? Or does it mean that I need to take accelerated coursework that will cover all of the language I would be learning in three years in just a few semesters?

  • Answer:

My guess, as I am only just starting down the college path @ 32, is that you need credits in (for example) French I, II & III.
