How much do high school grades matter, and should i go to community college?
-
I'm in my second semester at a university. It's not horrible, but I don't like it that much. I am applying to transfer to a university closer to home, plus it is a better school. I did not do that well in high school and I think it might hurt my chances of getting in. How much do high school grades really matter once you're enrolled and doing fairly well in a university? If I don't get in, does it make more sense to go to community college to save some money and apply again after a semester? Or should I just return here to avoid jumping around so much and apply again?

Answer:
Student loan debt was important to me, so I personally decided to attend a community college and transfer to a University. I am glad I made the decision! Not to mention as you know, some of your larger University gen-ed classes are not even taught by the Professor but by Teaching Assistants (grad school students). If you decide to transfer to the community college, go ahead and get the AA degree. I would not hop around after only one or two semesters. You should also do your research on the major you want at the University and take the pre-reqs at the community college so you don't end up staying at the University longer than need be. For example, for my major I chose at the University, one of my sciences had to be Human Biology, and I had to have other course work (psychology and sociology course work, etc)....so I was able to take those at the community college to fulfill my Associates of Arts requirements as well. Or you could go ahead and transfer to the University you are interested in attending to see if you can get accepted. Good luck! You do have some options out there!

The 2 full semesters at your university are the most important grades. Your high school transcripts are reviewed but hold much less weight. Not sure about the community college idea. If you aren't accepted the first time will 1 or 2 more semesters at jc help? I would start applying to other schools and stay put until somewhere better accepts you. Worst case scenario you can usually take up to 2 semesters off without having to officially leave your university. If you do take time off, keep taking general ed at a community college and pursuing your university of choice. If you can't get into a better college within that window of time, go back to your current school and finish your degree. Don't forget, that's the most important part.
