Canada Arctic Region service industry?

  • How important are the service industries in the canada arctic region? (banks.. wholesale and retail, institutions? how does the number of people employed in services compare with the number employed in primary and secondary industries? i'd really, really appreciate it if there was a graph.. or some key visuals to help me understand more as well as the oil, gas, minerals- getting them from the arctic region is primary industry.. what is the secondary industry for that? && can anyone find me statistics on # of canada arctic region people employed in primary industry and secondary industry?

  • Answer:

Service industries are very important because they exist mainly in the three largest urban centers of Yellowknife (Northwest Territories), Whitehorse (Yukon Territory), and Iqaluit (Nunavut). This means that even though they are not serving a large number of people, the geographic area that they need to cover is very large. This ties in with transportation and other forms of infrastructure. I'm not doing research for you but here's a good link to get you started, it's from the Canadian government: http://www.statcan.gc.ca/start-debut-eng.html
