What jobs can you get with an associates degree in nursing?

If I get an associates degree in nursing, can I get a bachelors degree in something else without having an AA?

  • If i get an Associates degree in nursing, can i get a bachelors degree in something else without having an AA? I eventually want to become a doctor but i realize that i need to gain some hours in the medical realm before applying to medical school and i would also like to work while going to school. so if i have an ASN, and become an RN, can I also get a bachelor degree in somthing not related to nursing like pre-med chemistry or even music? thanks!

  • Answer:

Short answer: Yes. Long answer: Yes, but it might take you longer than two more years of school. It will depend on what (if any) of the classes from your AA transfer to your new school and whether or not they fulfill any of your school's requirements. Every schools has general requirements you are expected to fulfill, plus requirements that are specific to each major and are in addition to the general education requirements. Depending on what you will have to do to to meet your new school's requirements, you may have to take more than 2 years to finish.

Too many directions at once Get a focus. You mention having an AA in nursing which I would think would make you an LPN (licensed practical nurse). You mention going in a different direction to get a bachelor degree - but they suddenly you're an RN. You truly do not have time and money to get the RN bachelors, and then another bachelors (or maybe paramedic training) and then apply to medical school. If your real goal is to be doctor, then focus on that goal. Check this website: https://www.aamc.org/students/applying/requirements/ You need to take classes that will enable you to pass the MCAT test. An RN degree isn't the path. You need chemistry, biology and other classes. Look for a college for your bachelors with pre-med. This website is all about considering a medical career, how to apply to medical school, and the MCAT. Take some time to study what is has to say.

Yes, but few of your nursing credits will transfer. However, medical schools do not like to admit nurses as they consider that doing so results in the waste of a nursing education that could have been used by someone who wanted a nursing career. If you want to be a physician, do not become a nurse first. Consider becoming an EMT first if you want a medically related job.
