Will this affect my chances of getting into a GOOD University?

  • So,I'll be in high school next year and was wondering if I'm not in honors classes will that affect my chances of getting into college. Will it? I am normally a straight A student and I have the grades for honors classes, but they always seem to overlook me. I have better grades than half the people in honors, but I can't seem to get in. It doesn't really bother me that much because from what I hear from my honors friends,it sounds like not very many people like it. But,what I was wanting to know was...Will it affect my chances of getting into a good college if I don't get in honors classes for high school? Some people(teacher&parents&other adults) have told me I will be overlooked if I don't get in. But others have told me they look at your grade point average to determine if they want you. I could probably easily graduate with a 4.0 or higher(4.5)if I wanted to. But I'm always overlooked for everything and I'm worried that if I'm not in honors that the colleges won't even notice me. I'm not entirely sure what I want to do with my life just yet,but I have had the same 3 choices since I was about 6. Choice 1 would be studying Journalism/Writing at Columbia in New York, choice 2 is Architecture at Cambridge in England, and choice 3 would be Archaeology/Anthropology at Cambridge. Are those good choices? I have also wanted to study at Julliard or Tisch for play writing since I was about 8 years old. But I've not sure if that could be a reality since the number of people who are in to theater are decreasing. But will not being in honors affect my chances of getting into any of these colleges? Also, they say extracurricular activities help, but all my high school really has is art and sports. Nothing more.

  • Answer:

Yes, it will affect your chances of gaining admission to Columbia and Cambridge. These are top 10 schools, and to be competitive with other students applying to these schools you must take high level courses, like AP level courses, and receive A's in them. This is a result, because everyone else who is applying to these schools will all have a incredible high school transcript with very rigorous class loads. On a side note, honors level classes are not really rigorous.

Colleges ask for unweighted GPA on a 4.0 scale. If your school offered honors classes and you didn't take them, you have no shot at a great school. None at all. It doesn't matter what your GPA is - you took the classes that they offer for people who aren't going to college. It's easy to get all A's in easy classes, but you haven't challenged yourself at all, and no good school will consider you. Of course, it doesn't matter what you do before high school, but in high school you take honors and AP if you want any shot at a good school. And it sounds like you're still overreaching, because even with a 4.0 in the hardest classes you'd only be about an average applicant at best for the schools you're talking about, which take about 6% of applicants.

Yes, you will need to have a number of honors and AP classes in order to be considered at a school like Columbia. If you're a straight-A student, don't let them "overlook" you. Your parents should go to the administration office or guidance counselor and ask what the criteria are for honors classes, and why you don't meet them. If you do, they should insist on your being put on the honors track. If your parents won't or can't do this, do it yourself. Even if you struggle in one subject, you should be able to take honors classes in the other subjects you typically do well in. As far as extra-curriculars go, if your school doesn't have programs that interest you, maybe your community does? Community theater? Volunteer work? Could you take music or dance lessons? But don't give up on high school so quickly; they probably have school plays, key club, debate, a yearbook committee, a school newspaper, or something you could get involved in.

Yes, I'm sorry. They do look to see if you have AP or honor classes--but that doesn't mean good colleges will overlook you 100%.
