Chemical engineering or medicine?

Should i study medicine or engineering?

  • it feels kinda strange to ask this question here.. but i just thought that it will be a good way to gather more opinions. i am going to start school at a local university for a course in chemical engineering. i chose engineering as i really like physics, chemistry and mathematics and i don't know what other course to take. however, i also have an offer to study medicine at the University of New South Wales (australia) i applied for it cause my dad really wants me to become a doctor and he started being insistent on me going to medical school when i got my results back and i happened to get straight As. what's holding me back is mainly because medical school is 6 years and i will really be out of my comfort zone as i will be away from home and i really don't know if i am capable of being a doctor. also, i have not studied biology for 5 years (i am 19 years old now) as i chose to study physics and chemistry instead of biology as i really like physics! many people have asked me if i really do have an interest in medicine as i will really need the passion to last for the 6 years. well, i am rather interested in the human anatomy, biochemistry... in the sense that i won't mind studying it. but i don't know if my faint interest will enable me to survive medical school. i'm really confused now and i have no idea what's installed for me in the future. i'll love to hear your advice! : ) thank you!

  • Answer:

You need to REALLY want to be a doctor if you're going to study medicine. It's extremely difficult ant cutthroat, so if you go into medicine without loving it in the beginning, you're gonna hate yourself for it. I know people that have gone through medical school and really regretted going into medicine. So, instead, they opted to become a teacher at medical schools instead. Become an engineer because you seem to like it. Anyway, you can always change your mind a few years down the road because you can still apply to medical school with an engineering degree.

The bottom line is to do what you want to do, engineering and medicine are both great fields. To go to medical school, you can study anything. If you wanted, you could study physics or biochemistry!

i'd go with engineering seeing as medicine doesn't seem to be a huge passion of yours, or you could do medical engineering?

Go for Medicine! more chance of getting a well paid job and gives you a chance to help others!
