How Do I Become A Pediatrician?

How long exactly can we become a Pediatrician after High School?

  • I am in year 10 this year and in about a term (10 weeks), I will be needing to choose my subjects for my senior year of high school. I really love taking care of kids and babies. So I am thinking of becoming a Pediatrician but I am not sure how long exactly will it take to be one. I know it will be stressful. What major should I take? How long will it take in UNI and after UNI (Med school) etc etc ? 10 points for best answer. No spams on my age or whatever that is nothing to do with Pediatrician. Thank you.

Your question is appearing in the "USA Questions Only" section, but your terminology is different from that usually used in the USA. If you are not from the USA, you may get better responses in the section for your home country; see flags at the bottom of the page. If you are from the USA, your major does not matter much. You just need to take premedical courses (biology, general and organic chemistry, physics, etc.). Historically math, statistics, and physical science majors have the high MCAT scores and a better chance of admission. In the USA, the usual route is four years of college followed by four years of medical school followed by three years of paid residency in pediatrics. Before you commit yourself to a career in pediatrics, try to get some experience with sick or injured children to be sure that you will still love caring for kids and babies when they are not feeling their best.

Hi You should feel free to pursue your passion and get a degree in the humanities or any other areas as you want. However, you need to make sure you fit in a certain number of classes that all accredited medical schools in the United States require: One year of biology with lab Two year of chemistry with lab (One year of general chemistry and one year of organic chemistry) One year of physics with lab One year of calculus One year of English Scores on AP tests can often be used to meet these minimum requirements. However, if you took AP Biology in high school, it is a good idea to take an advanced biology course such as anatomy and physiology or microbiology in college. Usually, medical expect you to do 4 years of college, but some medical schools work with undergraduate programs to combine and shorten the total amount of time spent in school. In most cases, you will be required to take a rigorous test called the MCAT for admission into medical school. Medical school lasts four years and features a combination of formal coursework (through lectures, study circles, etc.) and clinical practice. Regardless of what sort of doctor you want to be, you will get experience in a wide variety of areas such as: Human anatomy, pharmacology, and neuroanatomy in your classes… Pediatrics, emergency medicine, and surgery in your clinical rotations… Hope this helps
