Can you transfer from a state University to a private college?

Would I be able to transfer from Community College to an out of state University?

  • My dream school that I've always wanted to go to is Miami University. I'm a Junior in High School right now, and honestly, my grades have not been the best (I have a 1.9 GPA). I'm probably going to enroll into J. Sargent Reynolds Community College (in Virginia where I live). I would really like to go to Miami though, would I be able to transfer there after two years at community college?

  • Answer:

You can, but it is much easier to transfer to a university in the same state.

Yes, you can apply to any 4-year college or university to transfer (if they accept transfers, and most do). But you'll need much higher grades in college to have a shot at transferring to a great school.

Sure you can. Double check with the Community College to see that credits you can transfer.

I would recommend calling a free college search service. They can tell you if Miami U would be able to accept you as a transferee and what grades you need. Also, if you can't meet Miami U's grade requirements, you can ask them about other universities that will. Phone number is 1-877-918-1840, mon-fri only, 9am-9pm eastern. I answered a similar question a few days ago and they called the number and chose my answer as the best answer. I recommend writing down the questions you have for them before calling so you can get as much info as you can when you call.
